CT Scanning in Addison's Disease Often, no active disease is found, but adrenal calcification usually indicates that tuberculosis was the cause of the adrenal failure. This is sometimes missed using conventional radiography and is most readily seen using computerised tomographic (CT) scanning of the adrenals (Fig. 9.10). In the acute phase of the tuberculous disease (i.e. less than two years' duration), CT scanning usually demonstrates that the adrenals are enlarged, whereas in patients with disease of longer duration, the adrenals are small. Fine-needle aspiration has been used to make the diagnosis of tuberculosis in patients with enlarged adrenals. Both magnetic resonance imaging and CT scanning have been used to diagnose intra-adrenal haemorrhage. See also: • Imaging in Adrenal Disease
